Why Small Businesses Matter

Shop small, do big things for your community

Why Small Businesses Matter puts a spotlight on the local merchants who donate their time, talent, goods, and services for the betterment of our community. The shop local movement spreads virally as local businesses who are “tagged” have the opportunity to share their story!

You’re IT Davis Education & Career Consultants!

Three questions with Debbie Davis, owner and founder of Davis Education & Career Consultants.

Why did you start your business?

I believe in a lifetime of learning, whether in the classroom or on the job. I wanted to pass that inspiration on to others in our community. My mission: to provide positive, professional and compassionate advisement on education and career- always with the goal of lasting relationships. A business model I was especially proud to launch included hourly services, pro bono work, free community programs and annual scholarships- ensuring that as many families as possible had access to knowledge and opportunity.

Finish this sentence in regard to your business. “I wish I could…”

I wish I could stamp out the high levels of stress families face during college planning, which is now only exacerbated from the Covid-19 pandemic. At this time, I feel a deep sense of responsibility to my community to serve as a source for information, like many other small businesses in our town. So, to keep families abreast of what’s happening in the college world (for both high school and college students), I’m working hard at updating my website with daily tweets, weekly blog posts, links to resources, and monthly newsletters. I’m also developing content for Zoom programming requested by various local groups.

How many local businesses do you use to support your business (products and services) and can you name them?

Now into my 15th year, business support has run the gamut of hiring financial services (Fairfield County Bank, Reynolds and Rowella, Morgan Stanley), referring clients for testing and counseling (Ridgefield Education, Tutoring Club, Insight Counseling), renting office space (Addessi LLC), seeking computer check-ups (Chris Thomson), purchasing gifts, books, and office supplies (Books on the Common, Turkey Ridge, Bella Home, Squash’s, Craig’s Fine Jewelry). And there’s so many more…

I love that I welcome clients to my office on vibrant Main Street, with easy access to a hot cup of coffee at Steve’s or Tazza, a business lunch at Bailey’s or Luc’s, a quick bite at Prime Burger or Chez Lenard’s and in the summer months, ice cream from Deborah Ann’s. Running a small business in Ridgefield is about connections on so many levels. I have been honored to live and work here.
